A lifelong flu vaccine is under development at the Nebraska Center for Virology and shows promise for providing long-term protection against the influenza virus.

Seasonal vaccinations are developed according to what flu strain is expected to do the rounds each year but, by using ancestral genes from four different strains of the flu, these researchers may succeed in developing a lifelong flu vaccine, Fortune reported.

It is still early, and the vaccine has not yet been tested on humans but, according to a news release issued by the Nebraska Center for Virology, the results are promising.

In a number of tests, mice protected by the vaccine were able to survive exposure to lethal doses of several divergent flu viruses, their research found.

The mice that received higher doses of the vaccine did not display any flu symptoms, compared with mice that got sick and died after receiving traditional flu shots and then being exposed to the same viruses.

According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been at least 12,000 flu-related deaths occurring in the U.S. between 2015 and 2016, with an estimated 310,000 flu-related hospitalizations and 11 million flu-related medical visits.

In light of this, assistant professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and lead researcher of the project, Eric Weaver, said the ultimate goal was to provide one vaccination that ensured lifelong protection.

"Our current influenza vaccine programs and technologies reduce influenza infections and hospitalizations by 4.75 percent and 6.9 percent, respectively," Weaver said in the news release. "There is no doubt that there is a need for more effective vaccine technologies."
