Lego 'Dr. Who' Set, Based on Fan Favorite BBC Series, to Debut This Year

Lego will debut a "Doctor Who"-themed set later this year after striking a licensing agreement with BBC Worldwide to create the first toys modeled after the long-running British show.

The concept was generated through Lego Ideas, which allows fans to vote on new set designs, the Los Angeles Times reported. "Doctor Who" fan Andrew Clark, who works as a video game artist, submitted the newest model. His design included a folding time machine and spaceship that Doctor Who uses on the show and also featured an incarnation of "companions and monsters, among them Daleks and Weeping Angels."

Lego has not yet revealed which characters will be part of the "Doctor Who" apart from Peter Capaldi, who plays the current Dr. Who, but many believe his most notable villain The Daleks will be part of the set, according to The Guardian U.K.

"We're extremely excited to announce that a 'Doctor Who' and a 'WALL-E' set will be released as our next Lego Ideas fan based sets, congratulations to the designers Andrew Clark and Angus MacLane," Emma Owen, Lego Ideas' U.K. spokesperson, said in a statement on the BBC Worldwide website.

"After receiving over 10,000 votes from the online community and having gone through rigorous toy testing from our expert panel, these awesome sets are on track to be on shelves later this year. The final set designs, pricing, and availability are being worked out as we speak, so watch this space for the final details," the statement continued.

The science fiction drama has been showing on the BBC since 1963, according to the British network.

"Both 'Doctor Who' and Lego enjoy a particularly close relationship with their fans and I can't wait to see what Lego produces," Marcus Arthur, of BBC Worldwide, said in a company statement.

"Doctor Who" fans rejoiced about the news on social media.
