A 20-year-old Michigan man had his leg amputated after he fell from a boat and was hit by the craft's propellers. Two doctors, who swam out to where the victim was, applied a tourniquet and were credited with saving his life.

Authorities said the incident happened about 5:15 p.m. on Gun Lake, north of Kalamazoo, MLive.com reported. During a turn, the man reportedly fell off the side of the boat.

The boat passed over the man and his leg came in contact with the propellers, MLive.com said.

"(He) could have bled to death very quickly" if not for the doctors' help, Barry County Sheriff's Deputy Bill Johnson told WOOD-TV.

WZZM-TV reported that emergency personnel transported the man to Butterworth Spectrum Hospital, where his condition was unknown.

Johnson told WKZO Radio that the man's leg was cut off above the knee and that he underwent emergency surgery when he got to the hospital.

"He was talking, he was conscious, so hopefully he pulls through," Johnson said.

While tourniquets had fallen out of favor in recent decades because of concerns they increased the risk of amputation, medical personnel said that thought has given way to a new consensus that it is better to save a life than a limb, Reuters reported.

Since the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, more than 200,000 police officers in major U.S. cities have been trained to use the low-tech device to stop bleeding until victims can be taken to a hospital.

The two physicians who swam out to the victim were from St. John Hospital and Henry Ford Hospital and were visiting family when the accident occurred, MLive said.

Authorities told MLive that alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident, but Deputies noted that while it is illegal to drive a boat while under the influence it's legal for boat passengers to drink.

WOOD-TV said the man, who hasn’t been identified in media reports, was scheduled to start U.S. Marine boot camp in a few weeks.
