Acclaimed Hollywood actress Lee Purcell has earned numerous film, television and stage accolades over the years but she credits iconic film star Steve McQueen for kickstarting her acting career.

At the time, he took her under his wing and mentored her to appear alongside Michael Douglas in the 1970 American drama "Adam at 6 A.M." The rest is history.

The now 71-year-old actress revisited her early career in an interview with Fox News ahead of the Bentonville Film Festival in Bentonville at which her latest film, "Carol of the Bells," will be screened this weekend. She reveals details about McQueen’s personality and how he changed her life.

According to Purcell's official biography, she was always drawn to the arts and began dancing at the age of 3. She did her first television show at 5 and her first play at 7. Her big break came when McQueen selected and mentored her to star in his Solar Productions’ film "Adam at 6 A.M."

"I was just a young, struggling actress who hadn’t done much," she told Fox News of when he first selected her for the movie role. "At the time, he was the biggest movie star in the world. There was nobody bigger than him. He was so good to me."

Purcell explained how McQueen was a detail-orientated person who was eager to get working with her immediately.

"I was really skinny at the time because I had been a model and he wanted me to gain weight in a proper way. So we started working out," she said. "He taught me a lot about exercise, some that I still do today… He told me that he learned all these exercises from his Chinese personal trainer."

That personal trainer happened to be Bruce Lee.

"So I was trained by Bruce Lee via Steve McQueen. I think that’s pretty good," she told Fox News. McQueen also offered invaluable life advice and taught Purcell how to handle her finances.

Once filming wrapped up, Purcell moved to London to study and McQueen carried on with his life. He died 10 years later, at age 50.

"It was horrible," Purcell told Fox News but said she would always cherish their time together. "It was much more like a father and daughter relationship. And I needed somebody like him. It was really something."
