LAPD Shotgun Missing After Falling Off Motorcycle; Search Unsuccessful

By    |   Friday, 01 Aug 2014 04:40 PM

LAPD officers searched 12 hours for a shotgun that fell off the back of an officer's motorcycle Thursday in South Los Angeles, but it's still missing.

The police-issued gun had been hooked to the motorcycle with a locking mechanism.

“They'll be an investigation to determine (how the shotgun fell off), but we believe it was a defective lock in some way," an LAPD officer told NBC4 Los Angeles.

The search was complicated by an incident that occurred as officers canvassed the area: A police K-9 dog bit a police officer, who required surgery. The K-9 was taken out of patrol while an investigation into what occurred is completed.

The Los Angeles Times said the officer’s leg was severely bitten and another officer used a tourniquet that likely saved the officer’s life.

NBC said residents in the area were confident police would not find the shotgun, which was fully loaded.

“It’s fallen in the wrong hands, you know,” one man told NBC. “It’s supposed to been in the right hands, but it left the right hands and went in the wrong hands.”

Another said, “A shotgun layin’ there, anybody’s gonna pick it up.”

NBC reporter Gadi Schwartz said the lock he could see on the motorcycle appeared to be an older version of locks on other police motorcycles.

Schwartz also tweeted photos showing what the newer mechanisms look like, as compared to the older one that apparently failed.
