By    |   Wednesday, 13 Aug 2014 12:06 PM

A fatal LAPD shooting of a 25-year-old unarmed black man on Monday is drawing national attention in the wake of Saturday's police shooting of an unarmed 18-year-old in Missouri.

The L.A. police department released a statement about the incident on Tuesday, confirming earlier reports that identified the man as Ezell Ford. He was stopped on the 200 block of 65th Street in the Florence neighborhood in South Los Angeles around 8:20 p.m.

"During the stop a struggle ensued, which resulted in an officer-involved-shooting," the statement read in-part. "The suspect was transported to a local hospital and after lifesaving efforts he succumbed to his injuries. No officers were injured."

KTLA spoke with Ezell Ford's mother, Tritobia Ford, on Tuesday.

"My heart is so heavy," she said. "My son was a good kid. He didn’t deserve to die the way he did."

She claimed that her son was following the officer's orders, and that he way lying on the ground when he was shot three times. She said police refused to tell her where her son was hospitalized on the night of the shooting.

Sara Faden, spokeswoman for the LAPD, said Tuesday that she spoke with a scene supervisor, who said the officers were unaware of anyone being denied information.

A man describing himself as Ford's cousin said that, "They laid him out and for whatever reason, they shot him in the back, knowing mentally, he has complications. Every officer in this area, from the Newton Division, knows that — that this child has mental problems," he said.

"The excessive force . . . there was no purpose for it. The multiple shootings in the back while he’s laying down? No. Then when the mom comes, they don’t try to console her . . . they pull the billy clubs out."
