LAPD Shooting Suspect Had Been Rejected by LA Police Academy

By    |   Wednesday, 09 April 2014 07:49 AM EDT

A man walked into the Los Angeles Police Department's West Traffic Division on Monday and began shooting at officers and office workers, wounding one and getting wounded himself when officers shot back.

On Tuesday, The San Francisco Guardian revealed that the suspect, Daniel C. Yealu, 29, had likely wanted to be a policeman himself. Cmdr. Andrew Smith told reporters that Yealu, a security guard, had applied to the Police Academy in 2009 through the personnel department but was not accepted. Smith said he wasn't sure why Yealu was rejected.

Yealu allegedly used a .40 caliber glock, a semi-automatic weapon, when he walked into the department on the 4800 block of Venice Boulevard around 8 p.m. PST. He said he "had a complaint" and opened fire.

He shot an unidentified seven-year veteran twice in the shoulder, once in the side, and one bullet went through his front pants pocket. He was listed in good condition after being admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, according to CBS Los Angeles.

"An amazing story of survival," Chief Charlie Beck said. "It is an amazing story that he will be here with us. They responded courageously, they did what we expect them to do, but it’s more than expectation, it’s a hope because, believe me, courage under fire is a very difficult thing."

Upon opening fire, both a male and female officer fired back, immobilizing Yealu. He was listed in critical condition after undergoing surgery.

After raiding his apartment, officers found an entire arsenal of weapons with several hundred rounds of ammunition belonging to Yealu. He had a firearms permit for about 6 years that ended in December 2013, the same month his seven-year career as a security guard came to an end.
