LAPD Shooting During Probation Check Leaves Officer Critically Wounded

By    |   Wednesday, 26 June 2013 12:11 PM EDT

An LAPD officer was shot in the face and a parole officer was injured Tuesday night during a shooting while they were making a probation check at a home in the Willowbrook section of the city.

The unidentified suspect reportedly engaged in an intense firefight with officers after they tried searching the home. The suspect has not been arrested and it's not clear where he is, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"One LAPD officer, a 6- to 7-year veteran, was shot in the face. He sustained a bullet wound into his face," LAPD Commander Andrew Smith told reporters Tuesday night. "He was taken out of the area and transported to a local hospital. I'm told he's in critical but stable condition."

The incident appears to be separate from the Tuesday morning shooting that left two detectives injured when a black-clad gunman opened fire as the officers returned to the Wilshire Division police station on Venice Boulevard. That suspect, too, remains at large.

"Anybody who's willing to do this and take on two armed police officers outside of a police station is obviously a very dangerous person," Smith said in a press briefing. "We want to do everything we can to get this individual in custody so we can keep our community safe."

The LAPD was placed on tactical alert as the investigation unfolds.

"We asked all the stations to heighten their security and just be aware that this may be a pattern or there may be more than one person trying to do something," Smith told reporters. "We got no indications that that's happening right now, but in an abundance of caution, we're making sure and we're doing extra security at all our stations."
