Lance Berkman on Rangers Bench After Slipping on Plane's Steps

Texas Rangers first baseman Lance Berkman remained sidelined for the third straight game Sunday after slipping on an airplane's steps as the team returned home from a road trip Thursday night.

The spill aggravated his already surgically repaired right knee, but wasn’t severe enough to send him to the disabled list, according to ESPN.com.

"By this point, I'm used to dealing with aches and pains. It's not something I'm too concerned about," the 37-year-old Berkman told reporters Sunday. "I fell down the stairs, simple as that. My knee doesn't tolerate trauma very well."

Evan Grant, a Dallas Morning News baseball columnist, broke the news of Berkman's injury on Twitter.

Berkman has had four surgeries on his right knee and has been battling soreness for a while. Last season, he played in only 32 games for the St. Louis Cardinals after two surgeries.

The veteran baseball player tore his ACL during a flag football game when he was with the Houston Astros in 2004. He likened his fall on the plane steps to that accident.

"Unless you consider playing defensive back in a flag football game and tearing your ACL par for the course, falling down the stairs for me is in the same category," Berkman said.

The Rangers are currently in first place in the American League West. The team takes on the Seattle Mariners Tuesday night in Texas.
