Lady Gaga has revealed that she suffers from clinical depression triggered by post-traumatic stress disorder. The "Poker Face" hitmaker got candid about her mental health in a raw interview with Paper magazine published Monday, revealing that happiness was an ideal that she could not always obtain.

"Give me a break, [happiness is] not that simple," Gaga said. "I have clinical depression. There's something going on in my brain where the dopamine and serotonin are not firing the same way, and I can't get there. If someone says, 'Come on, just be happy,' I'm like, 'You f****** be happy.'"

Gaga was speaking about the themes behind her new album "Chromatica," which was inspired by the depression and PTSD she has been fighting since she was raped repeatedly at age 19 by an unknown man. For seven years, the now 33-year-old singer remained silent.

"I was so traumatized by it that I was like, 'Just keep going.' Because I just had to get out of there," she said, according to The Guardian.

Gaga also suffers from chronic pain. She was forced to confront her past when her body began to respond to the stress of the rape. She was eventually diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic inflammatory disorder linked to PTSD that causes pain throughout the entire body.

"Essentially it's neuropathic pain: My brain gets stressed, my body hurts," she told Paper magazine. "[I'm] angry at my body, angry at my condition, angry that when I'm stressed my body hurts."

The interview offers a glimpse into Gaga's vulnerable side, which she also revealed in her Netflix documentary "Gaga: Five Foot Two," released in 2017. In one scene, the popstar cries to her stylist Brandon Maxwell about her fear of loneliness.

"I'm alone, Brandon. Every night," she said. "And all these people will leave, right? They will leave and then I'll be alone. And I go from everyone touching me all day and talking at me all day to total silence."

Yet despite her depression, fears, and setbacks, Gaga is determined to convey a message of hope through her album.

"I will do whatever it takes to make the world dance and smile," she said. "I want to put out a record that forces people to rejoice even in their saddest moments. And by the way, I'm not standing over here with a flag going, 'I'm all healed, everything's perfect.' It's not; it's a fight all the time. I still work on myself constantly. I have bad days, I have good days. Yeah, I live in Chromatica, it took a minute to get here, but that doesn't mean I don't remember what happened. So if you're in pain and listening to this music, just know that I know what it's like to be in pain. And I know what it's like to also not let it ruin your life."
