Lady Gaga Concert Cancelled in Indonesia Due to Protests

Lady Gaga will not be granted a permit to perform next month in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta after Islamic groups voiced objections to the content of her concerts.

National police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar indicated Tuesday that the permit for her June 3 “Born This Way Ball” concert had been denied.

Three Islamic groups had expressed their opposition to the concert and criticized Lady Gaga, stating that aspects of her show would undermine the moral fiber of Indonesia. Some threatened to use physical force.

Lawmakers joined with religious leaders in speaking out against the pop star.

“She's a vulgar singer who wears only panties and a bra when she sings and she stated she is the envoy of the devil's child and that she will spread satanic teaching,” Salim Alatas, the Jakarta head of Islamic Defender Front, told Reuters.

“This is dangerous,” he added.

In comparison to other countries, Indonesia, a nation of 240 million people, has the largest population of Muslims.

Local police cited security concerns in recommending a denial of the permit for the show.

Lady Gaga’s Jakarta performance was expected to have the largest audience of her Asian tour, having sold out the 52,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno stadium.

In Jakarta, permits are typically issued approximately three weeks in advance of an event, and it is common to sell tickets well ahead of a permit’s receipt.
