The Los Angeles middle school shooting that left five injured on Thursday morning – including a boy shot in the head – was unintentional, police believe.

A 12-year-old girl was arrested shortly after the shooting, which occurred at Salvador Castro Middle School in the Westlake District of Los Angeles, the New York Daily News reported, and a semiautomatic handgun was recovered from the scene.

One student who witnessed the incident said the gunfire was not intentional, The Los Angeles Times reported.

“Someone decided to bring a gun, I guess someone was accidentally playing around with it," said a 12-year-old seventh-grader, according to the Times. “They thought it was a fake gun.”

Los Angeles police spokesman Josh Rubenstein said that all information pointed towards the shooting being an isolated incident “involving the negligent discharge of a firearm, where innocent children and a staff member were unfortunately injured,” per the Times

The gunfire erupted in one of the classrooms shortly after 9 a.m.

A 15-year-old boy sustained critical wound to the head while a 15-year-old girl was shot in the arm, NBC News reported. Both students were rushed to the hospital.

Two other students, an 11-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, as well as a school member of staff, a 30-year-old woman, suffered minor face and head injuries, but weren't shot.

Jocelyn Lopez’s 13-year-old sister was inside the class when the shooting took place and detailed the scene via a series of texts.

Speaking to KTLA, Lopez said her sister texted that she was OK, but had “just heard something pop inside the classroom.”

She later told Lopez that she was sitting next to two girls who were injured.

Classes have since resumed as normal and counselors are being made available to students impacted by the incident, according to KTLA.
