Kristen Wiig was confirmed by "Wonder Woman 2" director Patty Jenkins on Friday morning to have been cast as the villain Cheetah in the upcoming film.

"So incredibly lucky to welcome the sensationally talented Kristen Wiig to our Wonder Woman family," Jenkins tweeted about the casting choice. "Can't wait to finally work with one of my favorites. And SO excited by what we have planned."

News that Wiig, 44, was in talks for the role of Cheetah broke last week, Deadline Hollywood had reported. Wiig is best known for her work on "Saturday Night Live" and as co-writer and star in "Bridesmaids." She has not played a villain previously, but has had other non-comedic roles in smaller and independent films such as "Welcome to Me."

Though Cheetah was introduced in the comics in the 1940s, her most recent version is as alter ego to Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva, an heiress and anthropologist who gains superhuman strength and agility during an African jungle expedition, Rolling Stone reported. The villainess becomes a foe of Wonder Woman after the heroine upstages her at a social event and she becomes jealous.

No other casting decisions have yet been made for the movie other than Gal Gadot's return as the title character, USA Today reported. "Wonder Woman 2" is scheduled for release in November 2019.

Gadot also tweeted her welcome to Wiig, and other Twitter users were similarly excited.
