Kheris Rogers has built a booming fashion business by using years of relentless bullying at school as motivation, and now the 11-year-old Los Angeles girl told CBS News this week that her inspiration is making others feel comfortable in their own skin.

It all comes down to a simple saying that Rogers' grandma used to use to let her grandchildren know they were beautiful — she would tell them they were "flexin" in their complexion.

Since first grade, Rogers had been teased about her darker complexion and for years she was isolated from other children at school, who threatened to punch and hit her.

While it is reported that bullying is on the decline in schools, the effects are no less detrimental to victims.

One day, while in the bath, the girl told her older sister Taylor Rogers that she wanted to stay in the tub so that her skin could get lighter.

Saddened by this, Taylor Rogers posted a photo of her little sister to Twitter, writing "my sister is only 10 but already royalty" and added a #FlexinInHerComplexion hashtag.

The post went viral and inspired a whole movement. Based on this, the two sisters decided to team up to build a fashion house that created shirts with the slogan "flexin' in my complexion."

Since then, they have sold more than 10,000 shirts and captured the attention of celebrities, including rapper Snoop Dogg, who promoted the business on Instagram, and singer Alicia Keys.

Even actress, producer, and screenwriter Lena Waithe promoted the brand by wearing a shirt onstage at a recent event.

Last year Kheris Rogers' designs were featured in New York's Harlem Fashion Week, making her the youngest designer to participate, and she continues to inspire countless others with her fashion brand.

"I still remember the voices of the bullies that teased me for the color of my skin," she said in a tweet. "I'm so happy now that I'm in a place where I'm able to empower others to love themselves like I learned to love me."
