Fast-food fried chicken chain KFC apologized for a chicken shortage to its U.K. customers Friday with a full-page ad in several newspapers after the shortage caused most of the island’s 900 KFC locations to close earlier in the week.

CNN Money reported as many as 800 of the 900 KFC locations in Britain were closed Monday after delivery problems with a new supplier caused them to run out of chicken. About 700 locations had reopened by Friday but some will remain closed over the weekend, a KFC spokesperson said.

The chain addressed the chicken shortage with a full-page ad in Metro, The Sun, and local newspapers across the U.K. featuring an empty bucket of chicken with the logo rearranged to say “FCK.”

“A chicken restaurant without any chicken. It’s not ideal. Huge apologies to our customers, especially those who traveled out of their way to find we were closed,” the ad read, CNN Money reported.

The issues were a result of a switch to DHL delivery company, KFC parent company Yum! said, CNN reported. DHL admitted deliveries had been “incomplete or delayed” but said it wasn’t solely responsible for the problems.

The U.K. is KFC’s No. 1 market in Europe and in the top five globally. Ninety-five percent of locations in the U.K. are franchisee-operated, and the company encouraged franchisees to pay staff as normal during the closings. The chain did not say whether it would offer franchisees any compensation for having to pay employees when stores were closed.

KFC set up a web page to update U.K. customers on locations near them.

Twitter followers applauded the chicken chain's apology.
