WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.— A Kentucky state legislator has been injured attempting to break up a fight at a southeastern Kentucky high school.
A statement from a Corbin hospital says State Rep. DeWayne Bunch was in "extremely critical" condition after the fight at Whitley County High School Tuesday morning.
Whitley County Superintendent Scott Paul says two juvenile males at the high school were fighting in the cafeteria around 7:20 a.m. when Bunch intervened.
Bunch was transferred to UK Medical Center after being taken by ambulance to Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin.
Paul said the students have been suspended and the county's schools held a moment of silence Tuesday for Bunch, who has taught math and science for about 16 years.
The Republican legislator's district includes Whitley County and part of Laurel County.
