Ex-Kentucky beauty queen Kia Hampton was arrested for smuggling pot into an Ohio prison for an inmate in May.
According to reports, the 28-year-old Miss Kentucky USA 2011 was nabbed by police after she allegedly tried to smuggle marijuana to Jeremy Kelly, an inmate at the Allen-Oakwood Correctional Institution serving four years imprisonment for charges of drug trafficking, The Lima News reported.
"Hampton was indicted on July 13 by an Allen County grand jury and faces one count of illegal conveyance of drugs of abuse onto the grounds of a specified governmental facility, a third-degree felony that carries a three-year prison sentence," The Courier-Journal reported.
Ohio State Highway Patrol officers reportedly received evidence for a warrant from recorded phone conversations.
An affidavit said police presented Hampton with a warrant upon her arrival at the institution on May 26. While speaking to police, the former beauty queen allegedly reached into her pant leg and pushed a white balloon onto the floor. It was later confirmed that the balloon contained almost 3 grams of marijuana.
According to reports, Hampton voluntarily handed over the drugs and a strip search, performed by female officers, revealed she possessed no other illegal substances.
Hampton was crowned Miss Kentucky USA in November 2010, Fox News reported.
She was 21 at the time and became the first black woman to represent the Bluegrass State in the Miss USA pageant.
Arraignment is set for July 26.
