Ken Griffey Jr., Linda Cohn ESPN Interview Is Painfully Awkward

By    |   Friday, 07 March 2014 07:49 AM EST

ESPN's Linda Cohn was subjected to a painfully awkward interview when she spoke with future Hall of Fame baseball star Ken Griffey Jr. on Wednesday.

Ken Griffey Jr. appeared to promote the 25th anniversary of Upper Deck, the company that issued Junior’s coveted rookie card in 1989, which is currently a hot commodity in the collector's market, according to Sports Illustrated. Griffey Jr. gave Cohn one-word answers and appeared disinterested in the interview. Cohn kept her composure and remained enthusiastic.

When asked which baseball card was his favorite growing up as a child, he responded, "My dad," referring to Cincinnati Reds star Ken Griffey, refusing to elaborate much more than that.

When Cohn asked Griffey if there is a current player that resembles his playing style, he responded "McCutchen," referring to Pittsburgh Pirates all-star centerfielder Andrew McCutchen. When Cohn asked who is the league's best player, she got "McCutchen" again.

Though Cohn was professional throughout the interview, Cohn did not hide her disappointment later on Twitter.

Cohn later in the day tweeted that Griffey reached out to her.

Griffey, who will be eligible for Hall of Fame voting in 2016, was a 13-time all-star and a 10-time Gold Glove winner with the Mariners, Reds and White Sox. His 630 home runs are the sixth most all-time.

Cohn has been part of ESPN's SportsCenter since July of 1992 and her book "Cohn-Head" talks about her efforts to break though the male-dominated field of television sports reporting.
