A new line of Ken dolls has been unveiled by Mattel, including different body types, skin tones, and hairstyles.
The dolls were an attempt by Mattel to update Ken and make him more modern and diverse, according to ABC News. Seven of the 15 new dolls were shown exclusively on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday and 10 will be available in stores immediately.
The body types of the new Ken dolls are broad, slim, and original. One of the dolls features a
“man bun,” another has cornrows, and another wears thick glasses. The dolls’ clothing also has also been updated to looks including skinny jeans, faded denim shorts, and other contemporary styles, USA Today reported.
Ken’s look had not been substantially overhauled since 1984 when “Dream Date Ken” was released.
“By continuing to expand our product line, we are redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation,” Barbie Senior Vice President and General Manager Lisa McKnight said, ABC reported. “Evolving Ken was a natural evolution for the brand and allows girls to further personalize the role they want him to play in Barbie’s world.”
The new Ken dolls are part of more than 100 different new looks launched by Barbie in the last three years as part of its Barbie Fashionista line.
Many Twitter users seemed fixated on the man bun Ken.
