Kelly Clarkson said in a radio interview last week that she believes in spanking her children when they misbehave and after a warning.

“I’m not above a spanking, which people aren’t necessarily into,” Clarkson said during an interview on 98.9 The Buzz in Rochester, New York.

Clarkson has a 3-year-old daughter, River Rose, and an almost 2-year-old, Remy, with her husband Brandon Blackstock.

Clarkson said she was spanked as a child and attributes the disciplinary style to her southern upbringing.

“I’m from the South, y’all, so we get spankings,” she said. “My mom would call the principal if I ever ended up in the principal’s office and give permission for her to spank me. ... I’m a well-rounded individual with a lot of character, so I think it's fine.”

The three-time Grammy Award-winning singer said she warns River before spanking her, and that it seems to reduce the amount of misbehavior. Clarkson also said there is a line that crosses over into abuse, but she doesn’t believe a simple spanking crosses that line.

According to ABC News, a 2016 Gallup poll showed 62 percent of U.S. parents approved of spanking.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, however, does not recommend spanking or other physical punishments because it may teach children to be aggressive and may “become ineffective if used often,” ABC News reported.

Some Twitter users took Clarkson to task her comments.
