Katy Perry is being courted by "American Idol" to become anchor judge, ala Simon Cowell, on the rebooted show expected to air this fall on ABC, according to TMZ.
The "Dark Horse" singer is "in the homestretch" of negotiations to become the anchor judge, according to sources, and getting Perry is a priority after the show lost singer Kelly Clarkson to potential rival NBC's "The Voice," noted TMZ.
Clarkson won the very first "American Idol" competition when the show debuted on Fox in 2002. She went on to become a Grammy Award-winning singer, noted ABC News.
While on Fox, the show had three judges throughout the season, but the audience voted on who advanced in the competition.
Entertainment executive Simon Cowell as one judge became a household name for his caustic criticism of singers in the first seasons of "American Idol." Other early judges were record producer Randy Jackson and singer/dancer Paula Abdul.
Later judges included talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and singers Jennifer Lopez, Steven Perry, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick, Jr., said The Hollywood Reporter.
Perry on Monday announced her "Witness" tour would start Sept. 7 in Columbus, Ohio and conclude Feb. 5 in Vancouver, according to E! News. The concert will complement her upcoming album "Witness," set for release on June 9.
Perry will be the musical guest on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" on its May 20 season finale, noted E! News.
According to Perry's website, she will also perform May 27 in Hull, England for the Radio One Big Weekend concert.
Ryan Seacrest has also been approached about joining the show, according to Variety.
Seacrest recently announced he was joining Kelly Ripa on her morning show "Live with Kelly and Ryan," which is distributed in national syndication by Disney/ABC Home Entertainment and TV Distribution, noted Deadline.com.
