Kathie Lee Gifford Reveals Heartbreaking Reasons She Moved to Nashville

Earlier this year Kathie Lee Gifford packed over a decade's worth of memories into boxes then moved to Nashville. It seemed like a positive change for the former "Today" co-host, who has suffered her share of grief over the years, but relocating was not about starting afresh. It was to escape the oppressive feelings of loneliness she felt in her old Greenwich home in Connecticut.
“I moved here because I was dying of loneliness," Kathie said of her decision to move to Franklin, on the outskirts of Nashville, in an interview with The Tennessean on Tuesday.
For over a decade Kathie Gifford lived Greenwich. She raised her children there and built a life with her husband, onetime football player and TV sportscaster Frank Gifford.
Then tragedy struck. Frank died of natural causes in August 2015 and two years later Kathie's mother died. Kathie said that her "huge beautiful memory-filled home" suddenly began to feel like a morgue to her. It was time to make changes.
She set the ball rolling in December, after announcing that she would be leaving the "Today" show, which she exited in August this year. Then she packed up and moved.
"I'm making big changes in my life because I need to, really big changes that are feeding my soul," she said in an interview earlier this year. "If you're not careful, what you've lost in life can define you. It's so much healthier to be defined by what you still have," she continued.
"You gotta make new memories or the old ones are going to kill you."
That is exactly what Kathie is doing.
The bad news, she told The Tennessean, is that she is "a widow, an orphan, and an empty nester." The good news?
"I have the freedom of a widow, an orphan, and an empty nester. I’ve got all the time to spend my days writing. I’m having the life I could’ve only ever dreamed of."
