The announcement of Duchess Kate Middleton's pregnancy breaks a sad Diana summer for Britain's royal family.

The Duchess of Cambridge and her husband, Prince William, revealed on Monday that they were expecting their third child, much to the delight of their families and the public.

The announcement comes days after the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana's death and at a time of turmoil for the royals, who have been plagued by ghosts of the princess' past.

According to an official statement released by the palace, Kate Middleton has been suffering from severe morning sickness and has been forced to cancel upcoming appearances.

The royal couple opted to make an early public announcement, a welcome distraction from the Diana story.

Over the past few weeks The Daily Mail has been running a series of extracts from Andrew Morton's "Diana: Her True Story," which is being republished with a transcript of the "secret tapes" featuring audio recordings from the princess.

These excerpts have brought to light new and previously unheard accounts of the royal family as told by Diana.

Prince Charles has had to weather the heaviest of the storm as the spotlight shines upon his rocky marriage to the princess once again.

In one particularly haunting account, Diana recounts how she tried to commit suicide by throwing herself down the stairs while being four months pregnant in a desperate attempt to get her husband to listen to her.

Another published article details how the princess tried to cut her wrists weeks after her marriage to Charles.

"I was so depressed, and I was trying to cut my wrists with razor blades," Diana said, recalling how it "rained and rained and rained" that day.

Commenting on the news of Middleton's pregnancy, Christopher Andersen, author of the No. 1 e-book "The Day Diana Died," told The Daily Beast it was not an accident that the palace announced the pregnancy when it did.

"Had they made the announcement even a matter of days earlier, it would have made the 20th anniversary of Diana's death an even bigger news event than it already is," he said.
