Kate Middleton's Phone, Voicemail Hacked 155 Times by Tabloid

Kate Middleton's phone and voicemails were hacked 155 times by an editor at the now-defunct British tabloid News of The World.

Clive Goodman admitted to the hackings that took place in 2005 and 2006 at a trial on Wednesday, and also acknowledged hacking Prince William's voicemail 35 times and Prince Harry's nine times, The London Evening Standard reported.

Goodman, 56, was jailed in 2007 after pleading guilty to the phone hacking of royal aides, but said, "I have been as open and honest about hacking as I can be, but nobody has asked me any questions about this before," referring to direct members of the royal family.

He now stands trial for conspiring to pay officials for royal phone directories and commit misconduct in a public office.

Middleton was targeted, said Goodman, because she was becoming "a figure of increasing importance around the royal family."

"There were discussions about her and Prince William marrying, moving in, settling down. She started to receive semi-royal status and things were moving on," he said. The couple would eventually marry in 2011.

The News of the World was shuttered by owner Rupert Murdoch in 2011 after accusations and evidence surfaced of staff hacking the phones of celebrities, politicians, and a kidnapped 13-year-old girl, The Associated Press reported.
