Kansas Moves to De-fund Planned Parenthood

The move to ban public funding for Planned Parenthood didn’t win the day in the recent federal budget battle, but now the states are picking up the fight.

kansas, budget, planned, parenthoodKansas has joined Indiana in taking the first steps to strip the agency of federal family planning money they receive, the Kansas City Star reported. Gov. Sam Brownback, a Republican, proposed eliminating the Planned Parenthood funding in his proposed budget for fiscal 2012, which begins July 1.

The basic plan -- redirect about $300,000 in federal family planning funds from Planned Parenthood to state and local heath clinics.

“Gov. Brownback, along with the overwhelming majority of Kansans, opposes taxpayer subsidy of abortions,” Sherriene Jones-Sontag, Brownback’s spokeswoman, told the newspaper.

Last week, Indiana lawmakers moved a bill that would end Medicaid coverage for Planned Parenthood, essentially cutting off the agency from federal money.

In Kansas, the money that currently goes to Planned Parenthood pays for family planning services for low-income women. The money also helps pay for contraception, Pap smears and cancer screenings, among other things. It’s against federal law to use the money for abortions.
