Kaley West Young knew her wedding day last month was going to be an emotional since she couldn’t share it with her father who had passed away, but she wasn’t prepared for the sentimental surprise her brothers sprang when they found a way to include their dad.
The idea came months before the big day, when Kevin West suggested that all five of the brothers share a dance with Kayley West at her wedding in lieu of the traditional father-daughter dance, USA Today reported.
Their sister, the youngest of six, was very close to her father and was devastated when she and her brother Kasey West found him dead three years before on the bathroom floor from hereditary heart disease.
As her brothers began to plan the dance, they found a way to intersperse short clips of their father’s voice, taken from home videos, into a song— Michael Bolton’s “Fathers and Daughters.”
Kayley West had no idea what her brothers were planning and it remained a secret right up until her wedding day.
In video footage of the dance, shared to their family YouTube channel, her brothers say they would like to share a dance with Kayley West.
The song starts to play but then her father’s voice from a home recording comes on over the sound system.
“Hi Kaley! My name is Dave West and I'm Kaley's dad, and I love her very much. 1800 times worth,” their father says in the recording, according to USA Today.
In the video clip, Kayley West bursts into tears as she clings to each of her brothers, who take a turn to dance with her.
“I was struggling to even stand,” she said, according to USA Today. “I was trying to keep myself composed, but honestly the only thing that I felt was complete love.”
The video clip drew widespread attention and even piqued the interest of Bolton, who shared it to his Twitter account.
“i'm so humbled and honored that the west brothers choose my song #FathersandDaughters to dance with their sister Kaylee at her wedding. their video brought me to tears,” he posted.
Kayley West later said the gesture was a reminder of how important family was.
“And there's love in the world, and that's the greatest gift we could ever have to share to the world because the world deserves it,” she said.
