Jon Stewart's animated HBO project, which was originally supposed to begin during the presidential election, has been scratched completely.

Plans for the project were first announced in 2015, but on Tuesday night HBO said it would no longer be moving forward with the short form animation project with Stewart, the former host of the "Daily Show," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"HBO and Jon Stewart have decided not to proceed with a short form digital animated project," Stewart and the network said in a joint statement. "We all thought the project had great potential but there were technical issues in terms of production and distribution that proved too difficult given the quick turnaround and topical nature of the material. We’re excited to report that we have some future projects together which you will be hearing about in the near future."

This comes after Stewart signed a four-year production deal with HBO after a 16-year run with Comedy Central. He signed to work with OTOY, a clouds-graphic company, to create and present short form digital content.

"Appearing on television 22 minutes a night clearly broke me. I’m pretty sure I can produce a few minutes of content every now and again," Stewart said when he signed the deal.

The shorts that Stewart and HBO were collaborating on were expected to appear on HBO's digital apps like HBO Now and HBO Go, according to The New York Times.

When Stewart signed the HBO deal, the network was shifting its focus to producing unscripted content.

The cancellation of the Stewart-HBO project comes after the network canceled Bill Simmons' talk show after it was on the air for less than five months.

HBO has experienced some lows lately, but they expect to experience a boost when their hit show, "Game of Thrones," returns to the network for a seventh season two months from now.
