Pop star JoJo is opening up about her struggle with body image, which began at age 18 after her record label put her on a restrictive diet of just 500 calories a day, according to reports.

A healthy teenage girl should be eating four times that amount and in the back of her mind the JoJo knew there was nothing wrong with her weight, but the doubts began to creep in after record label execs sat her down and aired their concerns.

Speaking with Uproxx, the 29-year-old "Leave (Get Out)" singer recalled the time when Blackground Records president told her they wanted her to "look as healthy as possible."

"I was like, 'I'm actually the picture of health,'" she said. "I actually look like a healthy girl who eats and is active. And I don’t think this is about my health. I think that you want me to be really skinny.'"

Record label execs denied this but still put her in touch with a nutritionist who had her on a 500 calorie a day diet, which is equivalent to roughly four apples a day. When hunger did strike, JoJo said she was given injections to curb her appetite.

During that time, her label was not releasing any new music and JoJo started believing that if she lost a lot of weight, things would change.

"I was like, 'Let me see how skinny I can get, because maybe then they’ll put out an album. Maybe I’m just so disgusting that no one wants to see me in a video and they can’t even look at me,'" she said. "That’s really what I thought."

In 2014 JoJo was released from her contract with Blackground Records, according to People. Now she is back and ready to take on the music industry, curves and all.
