Johnny Depp's secrets were revealed in a London High Court on Tuesday when he took the stand on the first day of his libel case against The Sun.

Depp is suing the newspaper’s publisher, News Group Newspapers, and executive editor Dan Wootton over a 2018 article claiming the actor was violent and abusive to his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Last month, a U.K. judge ruled that Depp violated a court order by failing to disclose evidence related to his drug use to lawyers for The Sun.

Addressing the drug allegations, Depp admitted he had abused drugs from age 11.

"My experience of alcohol and stimulants began at a very young age. It was not a particularly stable or safe home life, there was a lot of unpleasantness in the house," he said, according to the Daily Mail. "I remember my mother used to ask me to get her nerve pills. Around the age of 11, it dawned on me that these pills calm your nerves and I brought them home and took one. That began what was the only way to numb the pain."

He added: "I'm well aware that there's been a lot of pain the way I was raised. When you are trying to figure out what it's all about, when success and notoriety and all these things come to you and you don't quite understand why you have them and you don't feel very worthy, it's very confusing."

During the trial, Depp further denied having "destructive and violent" tendencies. Central to the dispute with The Sun is whether or not Depp committed multiple acts of physical violence during his relationship with Heard between 2013 and 2016, in Los Angeles, Australia, Japan, the Bahamas, and on a private jet, according to The Associated Press.

Heard claims he attacked her on several occasions, but Depp said he did not and said there were several incidents during which Heard hit him.

"As things tended to do, (it) escalated and got physical, ending with a bit of assault. Ms. Heard struck me," he said of one argument. "Whenever it would escalate I would try to go to my own corner, as it were ... before things got out of hand."

Depp described a second incident during which the couple was on a private chartered flight late in 2014 or early in 2015. The actor claimed Heard grew "verbally aggressive" toward him.

"Then she became physically violent and repeatedly punched me in the face. As I moved towards the back of the plane to get away from her, she followed me into the plane's bedroom and punched me again in the face and the head," he wrote in a statement cited by the Daily Mail. "I pushed her away from me, onto the bed. I then grabbed a pillow and locked myself in the bathroom, where I slept for the duration of the flight."

Depp, 57, and Heard, 34, met on the set of the 2011 comedy "The Rum Diary" and married in Los Angeles in February 2015. They divorced in 2017. Each accuses the other of being abusive, and Depp is also suing Heard for libel in the United States.
