John Oliver, the host of HBO's "Last Week Tonight," assailed the NCAA for not paying its players during a 20-minute exposé on Sunday.
As The Big Lead reported, Oliver's comedic rant served as "a really good refresher course about poor athletes, rich coaches, fake classes and everything else you’ve argued about in regards to student-ath-o-letes."
Oliver kicks off by pointing out that the March Madness tournament earns the association over $1 billion in advertising revenue — three times more than the Super Bowl — yet none of this money is ever seen by the players, who live like indentured servants.
He explains, among other things, that Walter Byers, the first president of the NCAA, coined the term "student-athlete" so he could avoid paying workers comp to injured athletes, and that current president Mark Emmert continues to hide behind this designation to avoid paying players.
Oliver ends with a parody of the NCAA's videogame, which he calls "March Sadness."
