John Oliver, host of HBO's "Last Week Tonight," highlighted food waste in a new show segment, saying it’s a growing problem in America.
"At this rate, in 40 years when you order pizza from Domino’s, they’ll just deliver it straight to the nearest dumpster. As they should, but that’s not the point here," he joked during one part of the segment.
Oliver cites news reports that estimate Americans throw away 15-20 percent of the food they purchase — enough to fill 730 football stadiums each year.
A variety of factors contribute to food waste, Oliver explained, however a big factor is the supermarket.
"Use by" and "Sell by" dates are often confusing to customers, and err on the side of extreme caution.
Oliver, who often advocates for government solutions over private sector solutions, goes on to insist that, "Small businesses should get tax incentives to donate food, so we have to find a way to pass that."
