Sen. John McCain said over the weekend he was "ashamed" that the U.S. has not done more to help Ukraine as it continues to fight off an invasion by Russia.

"I’m ashamed of my country, I’m ashamed of my president, and I’m ashamed of myself that I haven’t done more to help these people," he told CBS host Bob Schieffer on "Face the Nation" Sunday morning.

"The Ukrainians aren’t asking for American boots on the ground. That’s not the question here. They are asking for weapons to defend themselves," said McCain, chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services. "They are being slaughtered and their military is being shattered."

The 10-month conflict saw the two countries agree to a ceasefire agreement last week, which was drawn up with the help of European leaders. The ceasefire quickly fell apart, however, with Russian troops assisting pro-Russian Ukrainian rebels with its military offensive.

McCain lamented the ceasefire, suggesting that it should have been clear it wouldn't have worked.

"I believe that German chancellor and president of France legitimized for the first time in 70 years the dismemberment of a country in Europe. It’s shameful. [Russian President] Vladimir Putin has not paid any price," McCain said.

"Vladimir Putin wants Ukraine not to be part of Europe, and he is succeeding in doing so."
