John Eisenhower Dies: Military Historian and Son of Ike Was 91

By    |   Monday, 23 December 2013 06:09 PM

John S.D. Eisenhower, son of President Dwight Eisenhower, died Saturday at the age of 91, The Associated Press reported.

Eisenhower was a brigadier general in the U.S. Army, a military historian and author, AP said. Born in August 1922, Eisenhower was the second son of Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower. Their first child died at age 3 of scarlet fever.

Like his father before him, Eisenhower graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; his graduation was on the same day that his father coordinated the Allied invasion of Europe, June 6, 1944, the AP noted.

Showing his father’s commitment to the U.S. military, Eisenhower spent 35 years in the Army, 19 of which were on active duty. He then transferred to the Army Reserves.

“I was raised in a military manner, and it was a given that Army brats went to West Point, so I went to West Point in 1941,” Eisenhower told C-SPAN in a 1998 interview, the AP reported. “And being in the military has been my life.”

Eisenhower was in combat during the Korean conflict, where he earned the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the Bronze Star.

In addition to writing military history books like “The Bitter Woods,” Eisenhower wrote a personal book about his father called “General Ike: A Personal Reminiscence.” He recently finished a book about William T. Sherman, a Civil War general, The Washington Post said.

Eisenhower is survived by his second wife, Joanne, and four children from his first marriage to Barbara Jean Thompson.

In a statement, Eisenhower’s family gave no cause of death.

In a U.S. Department of Defense release, President Barack Obama said of Eisenhower, “He grew up the son of an American hero, but emerged a great American in his own right. … His was a big and quintessentially American life — one of patriotism and character, learning and teaching, and a deep and abiding sense of service to his country.”
