Joe Torre's Daughter Catches Baby Falling From Store Awning

By    |   Thursday, 20 June 2013 07:23 AM EDT

Joe Torre made a lot of big catches through his 17-year baseball career, but his daughter Cristina may have done him one better, catching a 1-year-old who fell off a store awning of a Brooklyn building Wednesday morning, said news reports.

The New York Daily News reported that Torre, 44, just happened to be walking along Third Avenue near 91st Street about 10 a.m. when she spotted the baby boy hanging from outside a storefront.

Authorities told the Daily News the child then tumbled off the awning but Torre's made the catch as witnesses franticly called 911.

"The woman caught the baby,” witness Kristen Bramsen told the Daily News. “The baby was shaken. Everyone was going up to the woman and hugging her. I hugged her.”

Police told the Daily News that it appeared that the toddler slipped through a piece of cardboard placed next to an air conditioning unit in the window of his family’s second-floor home and made it onto the awning.

No question this ranks right up there with all that’s happened to me," Joe Torre told the New York Post yesterday about his daughter's save. Torre, who managed the New York Yankees to four World Series title said he was proud of his daughter for getting involved.

"Your children, that’s your proudest moments and when they are responsible and caring and all that stuff it is a proud moment, especially in today’s world where we seem to glorify bad things. I am just so proud of her,’’ Torre, an executive with Major League Baseball, told the Post.

The Daily News and Post said Cristina Torre could not be reached for comment after the incident.

The Daily News reported that the boy's father, Sam Miller, 23, was taken into custody at the scene. The newspaper stated that Miller and mother, identified as Tiffany Demetria, 24, face charges of endangering the welfare of a child and neglect.

The boy was taken to Lutheran Hospital, where he was placed under observation, noted the Daily News. The Daily News wrote that authorities placed the boy and three siblings — ages 2, 3 and 5 — into the custody by the city’s Administration for Children’s Services.
