Sen. Joe Manchin's Heimlich's maneuver saved a choking Sen. Claire McCaskill during a Democratic caucus lunch in Washington, D.C. Although she suffered a broken rib, McCaskill continued her weekend campaign schedule, even joking about the incident.

Dr. Henry Heimlich popularized the backward bearhug chest-compression maneuver in 1974 and it has been credited with saving thousands of lives since, according to National Public Radio.

Politico reported McCaskill started choking on a piece of food during the lunch last week and Manchin jumped in and performed the Heimlich maneuver to clear his fellow senator's throat.

KMOV-TV reported McCaskill sustained a broken rib from Manchin's effort to save her.

Manchin represents West Virginia and McCaskill is from Missouri. Both face tough re-election bids in November.

Jo Mannies, of St. Louis Public Radio, tweeted that McCaskill joked at an NAACP event Saturday that she would not be receiving any hugs because of her sore ribs.

"I'm really grateful to Joe — a little bit of a sore rib for a couple of weeks is no big deal," McCaskill said.

The Hill reported Manchin and McCaskill face tight battles in states won by President Donald Trump in the presidential election.

A Monmouth University poll last week showed Manchin held a nine-point lead over his Republican challenger, West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.

A poll by the Democratic Senate Majority PAC released June 15 reported that McCaskill was leading her opponent, Missouri Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley by six points. The poll suggested that Hawley may have been hurt by the recent resignation of Republican Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens.
