U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, collapsed briefly during a two-hour anti-Trump immigration rally Wednesday held by activists at an intersection a short distance from the White House, Politico reported.
Crowley, 56, who represents New York, was with eight other House Democrats and dozens of activists, including actor John Cusack, in the demonstration that protested the Trump administration's handling of undocumented immigrant children and families at the border, the publication said.
Fox News reported that temperatures were 85 degrees with high humidity in Washington, D.C. when Crowley fell to the ground near the W Hotel. Video from the rally showed bystanders around Crowley and offering him water.
The Congressmen was able to get back up after drinking the water and with the help of fellow U.S. Rep. Al Green, of Texas, and immigrant rights leader Gustavo Torres, was led to the hotel, Politico reported.
Fox News confirmed that Crowley was taken to a hospital where he remained responsive. It was uncleared why he collapsed.
Crowley posted a message on Twitter saying he was fine while continuing to push the cause of the rally.
Democratic lawmakers and activists told Politico that they wanted to provoke arrests by blocking the entrance of Customs and Border Protection, the parent agency to Border Patrol, but the Metropolitan Police Department declined to break up the protesters.
U.S. Rep. Judy Chu, of California, called the family separations at the border a result of President Donald Trump administration's vast immigration crackdown, Politico wrote.
CNN reported that the Trump administration decided last month to refer anyone found crossing into the U.S. illegally for federal prosecution, resulting in adults being separated from their children as the parents awaited criminal proceedings.
In a Twitter post last month, Trump blamed Democrats for the children of illegal immigrants being separated from their families.
