Joan Lorring Dies: Veteran Oscar-Nominated Actress Was 88

Joan Lorring, the Oscar-nominated actress of yesteryear, died Friday at her home in Sleepy Hollow, New York. She was 88.

Lorring, who received an Academy Award nomination for her role as Bessie Watty opposite Bette Davis in the 1945 drama "The Corn Is Green," had appeared in 36 film and TV series over the years, including "The Verdict," "Three Strangers," and "The Big Night" among other movies.


Born in Hong Kong, Lorring left for the United States with her mother in 1939 to escape the coming Japanese invasion. The two settled in San Francisco, where she started working in radio, The Associated Press reported.

In addition to film, Lorring's acting career also extended to television on the stage, having been featured in several TV shows, such as "Ryan’s Hope" and "The Love Boat," as well as in the Broadway play – "Come Back, Little Sheba," for which she earned the Donaldson Award in 1950, Variety.com reported.

Lorring is also remembered for her performance in the 1966 PBS production "The Star Wagon," which starred Orson Bean that included Dustin Hoffman in the supporting cast, The New York Times noted.

"Right up until her death, she continued to have fans who wrote and sought her autograph and she had a following," her daughter Santha Sonenberg said in a statement.

In addition to Santha, Lorring is survived by another daughter, Andrea Sonenberg, and two grandchildren. The late actress' husband, Martin Sonenberg, died in 2011.
