Jim Kelly, Hall of Fame QB, Now Has 'No Evidence' of Cancer

By    |   Thursday, 21 August 2014 10:02 AM

Jim Kelly, Hall of Fame quarterback, was cleared of his recent cancer diagnosis on Tuesday. In a follow-up screening, doctors said there was "no evidence" any of the sinus cancer remained.

"We have come away from our checkup visit in NYC encouraged and hopeful," Jill Kelly, Jim's wife, wrote on Instagram on Wednesday.

"Preliminary scan results have necessitated the need for biopsies to be done in order to confirm what we hope to be true ... that the cancer has been eradicated. We will not know the outcome until this procedure is completed. And so... We continue to pray, rejoice, live ... wait and trust God who holds all things together."

The hospital that treated Kelly, Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, released a statement after the screening. In it, Dr. Peter Costantino said that "The treatments so far have completely eliminated Mr. Kelly's pain, and his level of function has essentially returned to normal . . . It is possible that no further treatment will be required, and the testing over the next week will define this issue."

According to ESPN, Kelly was originally diagnosed with oral cancer in 2013, and underwent surgery to have tumors and part of his jaw removed. The cancer re-emerged in March, and Kelly underwent a two-month stint in chemotherapy.

Along the way, thousands of fans of the former Buffalo Bills star followed updates on Jim's progress via the Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts of his wife and daughter. Along with sending their prayers, they used hashtag slogans like "#KellyTough" and "#PrayersForJK" to show their support.

Several players, coaches, and recent draftees also dropped by during Kelly's treatment, including former rival quarterback Dan Marino.

In June, Kelly surprised players when he showed up for a minicamp practice, and attended the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Ohio a few weeks ago. CBS Sports reported that he threw a pass to former teammate Andre Reed at the ceremony.

A few weeks later, he acted as honorary captain at one of the Bills' preseason games, and his wife snapped a celebratory picture of him and their daughters for all of the family's fans.
