Football greats Dan Marino and Jim Kelly may have torn up turf when they were rivals on the field, but as Kelly faces the toughest battle in his life against oral cancer, a recent visit from Marino was much more friendly.
Kelly’s wife, Jill Kelly, posted a short video on Instagram of Marino striding through Kelly’s hospital door. Her caption read: “Kinda LOVED this visit! On the field warriors and off the field the best of friends. Amazing how a visit from this guy can lift Jim's spirits. Thank you Dan! @DanMarino Still all about squishing the fish though...#prayersforJK.”

She also posted a photo of Marino and two other well-known football leaders, Bill Polian, former general manager of the Buffalo Bills, and former football coach Howard Schnellenberger, who are “all part of Jim's story,” Jill Kelly wrote on the photo. “Interesting how trials bring us back together again. #prayersforJK Thank you Bill Polian, Howard Schnellenberger and of course#13 Grateful for your lasting friendship!”
Marino and many other football players, coaches, and managers were in town for Kelly’s 28th annual celebrity golf tournament, which he wasn't able to attend.
The golf tournament has raised more than $5 million to
help Kelly for Kids Foundation and the Hunter’s Hope Foundation, The Buffalo News said.
The event draws many of the football players who have surrounded Kelly during his career, including Andre Reed, Thurman Thomas, and Bruce Smith.
“Jim has great support not only from his family, but his extended family, which is me and all the guys he played with,” Reed told the Buffalo News. “The guy has been going through a lot. We’re there for him.”
