The original "Dumb and Dumber" is a comedy about two dimwitted friends driving cross-country to return a suitcase full of money.
Twitter users took to the social network to express their excitement.
"I am complete!!!" tweeted fan Rebekah Stewart Friday, referencing a theme of the movie.
"This just made my 2013," user Molly Varner wrote in reference to the movie.
"Jim has been against all sequels, and you know, understandably so," said Daniels, according to The Associated Press. "But he turned 50 and that will mellow you out, and suddenly he's going, 'Let's have some fun.' The Farrellys said, 'This isn't a money grab. Let's really write a great second movie that takes the original and then blow it up even further,' and so I think they did that."
Mike Fleming of
Deadline Hollywood said after rumors of the project being on and off the table, he believes "Dumb and Dumber To" will attract a big audience.
"For physical comedy fans, this is a real winner," Fleming said on Deadline.com.
Meanwhile, Amos Barshad of
Grantland.com said he was surprised Daniels signed up for a second helping of "Dumber," since the Michigan actor is currently star of Aaron Sorkin's HBO series "The Newsroom."
"The Farrellys and Carrey being on board isn't all that surprising: Neither 'The Three Stooges' nor 'The Incredible Burt Wonderstone' managed much of anything. But Jeff Daniels? He's down for this? I mean, the guy's got the second season of his very important Aaron Sorkin joint 'The Newsroom' out in July. ... I have no problem with it, of course. I'm just honestly surprised. Good for you, though, Jeff. Give the people what they want, man."
