Jill Duggar C-Section: Birth Story Not What She Planned, But Worth It

By    |   Tuesday, 14 Apr 2015 08:29 PM

Jill Duggar Dillard has revealed details of her dramatic labor and C-section to deliver baby boy Israel David on April 6.

"His birth didn't go as expected," the Duggar daughter told People magazine. "But having him here — it's worth all of it. I wouldn't do anything differently."

Dillard had wanted a home birth, but after 20 hours in labor and signs of fetal distress, she moved to a hospital, where complications continued. After 70 hours of labor, the baby had moved to a transverse breech position when the couple finally agreed to the cesarean section, People magazine reported. Jill Duggar Dillard and her husband, Derick, welcomed their 9 pound, 10 ounce baby at 11:49 p.m.

“I love our birth story because it bonded us so well," she told the magazine. "I still haven't changed a single diaper. Derick has been changing them all."

During the long ordeal, Jill, who had wanted to use a birthing pool for her home birth, initially refused pain medication and Pitocin, which can speed up labor.

People reported complications included traces of meconium, a baby’s first fecal material, which can endanger the baby if it is aspirated. Monitors also detected a irregular heart rates in the baby when it was in the transverse breech position (sideways and upside down).

The new mother also tested positive for strep B and took antibiotics via IV to prevent the bacteria from transferring to the baby during birth.

Fans had speculated that the baby was born via C-section based on his “nicely shaped head” and photos of Derick wearing scrubs.

Fans expressed support for the couple on the Duggar family’s Facebook page.

“Oh wow poor Jill, talk about being put through the wringer during labor. So glad she is ok, and baby Israel is as well,” one person wrote.

“Congrats. Doesnt matter how the baby gets here as long as mama and baby r healthy!! Jill did a great job!” said another.

Others questioned why she allowed the labor to go on that long.
