A "blasphemous" comic book series portraying Jesus Christ as a present-day superhero was canned weeks before its scheduled release following a petition calling for its cancellation.

The DC Comics series, which was co-created by writer Mark Russell and artist Richard Pace depicted Jesus Christ in a modern-day setting under the new persona of "Sun Man," the New York Post reported. According to the comic series, Jesus Christ was sent to the present by God after a disappointing attempt to save humankind.

Conservative Web site CitizenGo caught wind of the forthcoming publication and launched a petition calling for the "blasphemous" comic book to be canceled.

"This comic is inappropriate," stated the petition, which garnered over 230,000 signatures. "Can you imagine the media and political uproar if DC Comics was altering and poking fun at the story of Muhammad ... or Buddha?"

"It wasn't because of any displeasure with DC or their editorial staff," author Russell said, according to the Post.

"DC did not do anything untoward to me," Russell stated in a tweet.

He vows the comic book will be published: "It will still be released, albeit with a different publisher."

DC initially requested changes to be made to the comic book and then pushed the release date back before later pulling the series, The HuffPost reported. Russell and Pace weren't comfortable with making the changes and instead requested the rights to the publication, which DC relinquished.

Taking to Twitter, Russell elaborated on the situation.

"My goal is always to write the best books I can about things I have a deep personal attachment to. Publishers have goals of their own," he said. "Sometimes our goals complement each other's, sometimes they don't. It's okay to admit it when they don't and go separate ways."
