A Jerusalem drive-by shooting killed two people and wounded four over the weekend when a gunman opened fire from his vehicle at a light-rail stop near the main police headquarters in Ammunition Hill, Israel.

One of the victims was 60-year-old Levana Melihi of Jerusalem, who died after being taken to Mount Scopus Hospital, CNN reported.

The attack was carried out in broad daylight, and ended up being one of the bloodiest attacks among a year's worth of Palestinian assaults, according to The Christian Science Monitor.

The attacker fled toward the eastern Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah as police on motorcycles engaged the assailant in a chase, according to police spokeswoman Luba Samri.

The attacker then opened fire in the direction of the officers as one officer shot back at him. One of the officers, 29-year-old Yosef Kirme, was killed in the shootout while another was wounded, CNN noted.

Police are describing the shooting as a terrorist attack, and the attacker —identified as a 39-year-old Palestinian man — also was killed, CNN noted.

Authorities have elected not to release the man’s name because of an Israeli-issued gag order.

According to The Monitor, the shooter was a member of Hamas — a militant group with a lengthy police record — and despite Israel beefing up their security due to the potential for violence during the Jewish holiday season, that didn’t prevent the Sunday drive-by shooting.

According to the shooter’s family, prior to the attack, he was due to turn himself in to authorities to serve a four-month prison sentence for a 2013 assault conviction — an assault in which he attacked a police officer in the Old City of Jerusalem after revealing his motive on Facebook, CNN noted.
