Jeremy Clarkson: Cancer Scare Had Me Stressed During Producer Fracas

Fired “Top Gear” host Jeremy Clarkson was told he might have cancer just days before he punched a show producer, Clarkson said in a Sunday Times editorial.

“As you may have heard, the BBC has taken my gun and my badge, and I must admit it’s all been a bit of a shock,” he started his article. “For more than 12 years Top Gear has been my life, completely. It was an all-consuming entity, a many-tentacled global monster that was dysfunctional and awkward and mad but I loved it with a passion.”

Knowing his contract for the BBC show will not be renewed, Clarkson wrote that he will pursue another car show. "I have lost my baby but I shall create another," he wrote.

Clarkson said two days before he hit “Top Gear’s” Oisin Tymon, his doctor told him “sternly” that a lump on his tongue would have to be examined immediately because it was probably cancerous.

Although the lump was benign, Clarkson said he was stressed: “But everybody has stressful days, and they manage to cope better than I did,” he wrote.

Clarkson's cancer revelation in the article renewed ire from fans who were unhappy with his firing, while others used social media to say they’d been through hellacious experiences without becoming violent.

The Independent stood up for Clarkson. “Better, perhaps, to have stayed quiet about the pain of losing his mother last March, combined with the break-up from his wife of 21 years last May, and his exit from the family home. Clarkson also admitted to a panic over a possibly cancerous lump in his mouth, to his obsessiveness about work, and to his tunnel vision,” the publication said. “From anyone else this would have been startlingly honest, brave and trailblazing for other men suffering anxieties, but instead it was viewed by many as excuse-making and dishonest.”
