Jennifer Hudson Shines Singing in 'Black Nativity' Film Trailer

By    |   Monday, 01 July 2013 04:41 PM EDT

Much of America is suffering through record-setting temperatures, but Jennifer Hudson is getting crowds of movie goers into the Christmas spirit with her stirring rendition of "Silent Night" in a trailer for the upcoming musical adaptation of "Black Nativity."

“I really like what I’m seeing in this trailer when it comes to taking holiday music like 'Silent Night' and giving it a new R&B spin,” wrote Matt Goldberg on Collider.com. “I’m eager to find out what (director Kasi) Lemmons has done with the rest of the songs in the movie and how she’s filmed them.”

"Black Nativity" is Langston Hughes’ adaptation of the nativity story with an African-American cast singing traditional Christmas carols in the gospel style.

The movie, scheduled for release on Nov. 27, provides a contemporary spin with Hudson’s character, a struggling single mother, sending her son, Langston (Jacob Latimore) from Baltimore to Harlem to spend Christmas with his estranged grandparents (Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett).

If the Twitteratti are any indication, the film promises to be a hit. “Just watched Black Nativity movie trailer with @jacoblatimore it’s a must see…but November? Really? Too long a wait,” wrote @tiaramarshay.

“This trailer looks amazing, can’t wait to see it,” tweeted @Shania_Mshel

“Glad to part of this!” wrote Forest Whitaker (@ForestWhitaker) of the trailer.

Hudson has faced more than her share of challenges in life, attending every day of a trial last year for the man convicted of killing her mother, brother and young nephew. William Balfour was sentenced to life in prison. Balfour maintains his innocence.

Hudson gained fame in 2004 as a finalist on "American Idol" and went onto a successful recording and acting career, earning a Grammy Award for her debut album and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
