Jeb Bush Tried to Buy MLB's Miami Marlins, Report Says

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a potential 2016 Republican presidential contender, made a big offer to buy the Miami Marlins baseball franchise during the off-season but was turned down, according to a report in the Miami Herald.

Along with a group of wealthy investors that Bush organized that reportedly included Venezuelan media mogul Gustavo Cisneros, Bush made an offer on the team. However, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria turned Bush down.

Loria, 72, doesn’t want to sell because he said he loves owning the team, The Herald reports. He has owned it since 2003, and Forbes estimated in March that the team was worth $450 million.

The report also says Loria will have greater incentive to sell after 2014, at which point, he legally won't have to share profits with Miami-Dade County.

Originally called the "Florida Marlins," the team rebranded itself as the Miami Marlins in 2011, with new uniforms, colors, a new logo, and a new stadium.

Spokespeople for Bush and the Marlins declined to comment, the Herald said.

Bush's older brother, former President George W. Bush, bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in 1988 with a group of investors. He resigned as CEO in December 1994 but retained his ownership stake in the team until 1998, when billionaire Tom Hicks bought the team. Bush made almost $15 million from the sale, according to Grantland.

Jeb Bush served two terms as Florida governor. Since leaving office in 2006, he has been vocal about the Republican Party's need to reach out to minorities. He emphasized education as a key priority during his time leading Florida.

Bush is slated to speak at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in March, which is said to be a clear sign that he's considering a run for president in 2016.
