Jacky Sutton, a veteran British war journalist, was found dead at an Istanbul airport Sunday, but some have expressed doubt over initial claims that the reporter became distressed and committed suicide.

Sutton, 50, was reportedly found hanging in a restroom at Istanbul's main airport while traveling to Irbil in northern Iraq after missing her flight connection, The Guardian said based on local media reports in Turkey.

Sutton, who spoke Arabic and four other languages, was acting Iraq head of the Institute of War and Peace Reporting, an organization that supports local journalism affected by conflict and crisis.

"We at the Institute for War and Peace Reporting are devastated to announce the death of our country director in Iraq, Jacky Sutton," said a statement from the organization. "Jacky . . . was found dead at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport overnight on Oct. 17-18. She had flown from London to take an onward flight to her base in Irbil in the Kurdish Region of Iraq. The circumstances of her death are unclear, and we are trying to establish the facts."

The Guardian reported that Sutton's friends and coworkers found it hard to believe the Turkish media reports that Sutton committed suicide because she did not have enough money for a ticket after missing her connecting flight at the airport.

"Jacky was one of the top development professionals working on Iraq, and she devoted nearly 10 years of her life to helping the country," Anthony Borden, executive director of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, said in a statement. "She was extremely bright, highly competent, and well able to handle herself in difficult environments, and she was universally loved. We are in total shock."

Susan Hutchinson, a fellow at the Australian National University where Sutton was studying for doctorate, told The Guardian that Sutton was a "very tough cookie" and called for an independent investigation.

"There is a huge amount of skepticism among those that knew her that she would kill herself after missing a flight," Hutchinson said. "It just doesn't add up."

CCTV footage obtained by the Mirror U.K. introduced even more doubt. In the video, Sutton is seen inside the airport on the day she died. At one point she reappears with a shopping bag, meaning she must've had money to buy something.

Numerous people expressed their condolences online.
