Jackson, Mississippi, is the fattest city in America, based on a new study announced by WalletHub that compared 100 of the country's biggest metropolitan areas across 17 health indicators.

According to the survey, Jackson, Mississippi's state capital, ranked No. 1 in the country for diabetes while ranking No. 2 in percentage of physically inactive adults and adults eating less than one serving of fruit or vegetables per day, the Clarion-Ledger reported.

"Americans are the fattest people in the world. By one measure, more than 70 percent of the U.S. population aged 15 and older is overweight or obese," said Richie Bernardo, a senior writer with WalletHub. "But such a finding should come as no surprise, considering the proliferation of fast-food establishments and increasingly cheaper grocery items that have negatively altered our diets.

"Unfortunately, the extra pounds have inflated the costs of obesity-related medical treatment to nearly $316 billion a year and annual productivity losses due to work absenteeism to more than $8.6 billion," he continued.

Jackson also ranked high in the percentage of adults with high blood pressure (fourth overall), percentage of obese adults (seventh), percentage of adults with high cholesterol (10th), and access to healthy food (10th), the Clarion-Ledger said.

Jackson finished with an overall score of 84.93 in the survey, edging out the Memphis area (82.78); Little Rock, Arkansas (82.12); McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Texas (82.10); and Shreveport, Louisiana (81.82).

WalletHub analysts compared the metro areas over three categories: obesity and overweight, weight-related health problems, and a healthy environment, the survey said. The survey used 17 metrics and graded areas on a 100-point scale with 100 representing the "fattest."

Rounding out the top 10 "fattest cities," according to the survey are Chattanooga, Tennessee (79.23); Mobile, Alabama (78.86); Lafayette, Louisiana (77.03); Winston-Salem, North Carolina (76.74); and Knoxville, Tennessee (76.73).

Some on social media responded with sadness about the report.
