Ivanka Trump’s date night tweet has been criticized by many on Twitter and in the media who felt it was “tone deaf” to post about her $5,000 dress and black tie date while refugees were being detained at airports and protests over President Donald Trump’s refugee executive order were taking place.
Protests occurred all weekend as refugees were detained at airports in an attempt to prevent them from getting into the country in enforcement of Trump’s temporary immigration ban against seven predominantly Muslim countries.
Ivanka Trump’s tweet on Saturday night inspired many critical comments and even spawned the hashtag #LetThemEatCake, an allusion to Marie Antoinette.
One tweet compared Ivanka’s $5,000 silver dress to the silver emergency wrap worn by a young refugee girl, saying, “Who wore it better?” Others criticized the fact that Ivanka and husband Jared Kushner would dare to go on a date while her father was banning and detaining refugees.
She did have her defenders as well, however.
The comments on USA Today’s Twitter coverage of the story were mostly supportive of Ivanka’s right to go on a date in a nice dress no matter what her father is doing.
