Sales of iPhones took a hit over the summer, falling to third place in among smartphones.

Chinese handset maker Huawei passed Apple in smartphone unit sales for the first time this summer and the iPhone's rival Samsung comfortably holds the No. 1 spot in sales, according to the New York Post.

Huawei hasn't made its mark in America yet, but after performing well in China, Europe and Latin America, the handset maker was able to make a surge in sales in June and July.

While that was going on, sales for Apple's iPhone remained stagnant.

Huawei captured 12 percent of the smartphone market in June compared to the iPhone's 9 percent, Counterpoint Research said in a news release.

Huawei and the iPhone were both around the 12 percent mark in July, but Huawei was able to hold on by the skin of its teeth.

Counterpoint says Huawei led the iPhone in sales in August as well.

"This is a significant milestone for Huawei, the largest Chinese smartphone brand with a growing global presence," Peter Richardson, Counterpoint's research director, said in the news release. "It speaks volumes for this primarily network infrastructure vendor on how far it has grown in the consumer mobile handset space in the last three to four years. The global scale Huawei has been able to achieve can be attributed to its consistent investment in R&D and manufacturing, coupled with aggressive marketing and sales channel expansion."

"While this streak could be temporary, considering the annual iPhone refresh is just around the corner, it nevertheless underscores the rate at which Huawei has been growing," Richardson added. "However, a weak presence in the South Asian, Indian and North American markets limit Huawei's potential in the near-to mid-term to take a sustainable second place position behind Samsung. Huawei is over-dependent on its home market China where it enjoys the leadership position and operator-centric markets in Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East."
